Tartar sauce originated from the Tatars in Ukraine and Russia. Tatars, and later on, French, served it with seafood, especially raw fish such as tuna and salmon.
Tartar sauce is a high fat condiment. It is based on egg yolk with mustard and oil, and it usually includes ingredients such as vinegar, garlic and pickle, the amount of which can vary depending on the desired flavor one wants to achieve. Salt and pepper can also be used to balance the taste. Some may spice it with chili peppers, lemon juice or other kind of mustard or vinegar.
Other than seafood, the Tartar sauce is used with various other dishes, predominantly those which include meat. It goes well with beef, lamb, French fries and barbecue meat.
