Gyudon is a Japanese dish made of rice and beef. It is one of many Donburi dishes prepared and popular in Japan, despite its high calorie count.

As for every Donburi meal, a bowl of rice is the first step in preparation process. However, sometimes noodles are used instead of rice.

The beef is either diced or sliced thin. Onions, soy sauce, wine (mirin in Japan), and eggs are used when preparing the topping. These ingredients are simmered in a sweet and salty flavored sauce and poured over the rice. Traditionally, this dish is served with a miso soup as a side dish.

In the Western version of this dish it is not uncommon to find chilli peppers, red ginger, and sake used in making of the sauce. Also, in US eggs are beaten before added and not used raw (like in Japan).
