Manju is a dish originally coming from China, called Mantou. Later brought to Japan, it became one of the Japanese sweet shops favorite meal.

Even though there are many versions of Manju, almost all of them have one thing in common: the dumpling is made from rice (powder) and flour, and the filling is made of boiled sugar to which sweet red azuki beans are added.

Other known varieties of Manju are: water (mizu) manju, which looks like jelly, and green tea manju (Matcha).

In other countries, lima beans or beans typical for that region are used for the filling. The dumpling can be made from flour, vanilla extract, sugar, salt and butter.
