This is the most common problem people have to face. Following your dreams is simply impossible if you don't know what they are. So, what does it take for you to follow your dream? What should you do exactly to know what you want and to get what you want?

1. Take some notes

Make a list

For sure there are some things that have fascinated you for months or years or even ever since you were a child. The first step of following your dream is to know what your dream is. Make a list of all the things that you are passionate about at the moment or that you were passionate about at some point. You don't have to hurry with this list. Take your time and gather all your passions. Once you are done with the list, cross out all the things you are not passionate enough about. Following your passion is always easier that striving for a goal that involves a process you're not passionate about. In the end you should have about three passions left. After this just give it time. At one point it will simply hit you what you really want to do.

2. What is the end result?

Keep your options open for alternatives

When you do what you love, you will enjoy the end result as well. However, if you're doing something just for the end result, you will simply hate the process. If your dream is to achieve an end result, you should be looking for alternative ways to get there. Maybe you would like to pay back your mortgage loan and you think you have to work for your boss to do so. However, it is possible that you could achieve the same result if you opened your own pizzeria, especially if you like being around the kitchen. You could follow your passion even if it means combining several different passions.

3. You have to aim high

"Aim for the moon. If you miss, you may hit a star."

As it has been mentioned before, it is best to choose a few passions and pursue them than trying to do more things all at once. Now that you know what are your dreams, you should make sure you dream big. As strange as this may sound, people find it easier to achieve big goals because (even if they might seem impossible to achieve), they are worth ignoring other dreams for. For sure you have heard the saying: "Aim for the moon. If you miss, you may hit a star". This means that the higher you aim, the better your results will be, even if you don't reach your goal.

4. Divide and conquer

Career, family, and weekends.

Keep in mind: you can't do it all. This being said, you should divide your life into three areas to set goals in. For instance, you could think about your career, family and weekends. You should chase your dreams in all three areas. You might think that you want more and add more areas to set objectives in, but each time you do so, the odds of succeeding decrease by 25%. Although you should never give up on your dreams, you have to decide what is truly important for you and act on it. Let all the rest slip as they aren't important enough.

5. It is alright to put things off

Prioritize

In the moment you make a decision regarding your dreams, the ones you don't select won't be forgotten. After you live your dream you can revise all the dreams you put off and maybe choose a new one. None of your dreams will be forgotten. If you don't choose them it only means that they aren't top priority at the moment, not that they aren't important at all. The answer of the question how to make your dreams come true is to prioritize. You have to know what your top priorities are and act on them. Try not to change your mind at a later time.

6. You may have idle wants

Write them down

Although you know exactly what you want, idle wants may appear while you pursue your dreams. This is absolutely normal, but you shouldn't allow them you sidetrack you. Each time you put your dream on hold to pursue another one, you put off achieving success by months or years. For sure you don't want that. This is why you should make sure you are focused enough to make your dreams come true. You should write these wants down and when the time comes, revise your list. If they are important enough, they will make it to the top of the list then.

7. You can't have it all

Align your passions

It is important to remember that you can't have everything all at once. For instance, you can't become an athlete and a CEO at the same time. What you could do is to become an athletic CEO. This way you will be living your dreams both in the "health" and "career" department. There is nothing wrong with having several wants as long as you can align them so that they all help you reach one single goal. For example, you may want to become a good leader and having athletic skills will get you there. The easiest and fastest way to success is to have all your passions and wants aligned.

You can always follow your dream as long as you know what you want and how you can get there. Achieving success will always need some sacrifice from your part but in the end it will be all worth it. Life's like this: you make decisions and you don't look back.
